Project Overview
BlueNest is a personal document organizer built with Flutter, designed to be your digital filing cabinet. The app provides a unified workspace where users can manage notes, documents, and files — all organized into customizable, color-coded folders for instant retrieval.
The app supports multiple document types including PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, with visual file-type indicators and smart filtering. Users can create and pin notes with tags, organize content into emoji-adorned folders (Personal, Work, Studies, Projects, Finance, Travel), and track storage usage across their entire document library.
BlueNest features a comprehensive dashboard that surfaces recent notes and documents at a glance, complete with activity stats showing weekly additions. With biometric lock support, theme customization (Light, Dark, and Blue Focus modes), and intuitive search and sort capabilities, BlueNest transforms chaotic file management into a calm, organized experience.
The Approach & Solution
BlueNest was designed with a content-first philosophy — every screen prioritizes the user's documents and notes, with the app's chrome staying minimal and out of the way.
Architecture: Built on Flutter with a clean feature-first folder structure. The app uses efficient local storage patterns to handle document metadata, note content, and folder hierarchies without requiring cloud sync — keeping all data private and instantly accessible.
Design System: We developed a royal blue-themed design system with a light, airy feel. The color-coded folder system uses distinct pastel backgrounds (blue, green, yellow, pink, purple) with emoji icons to make visual scanning instant. Document type indicators use established color conventions — pink for PDFs, light blue for docs, mint for spreadsheets.
Smart Organization: The folder system supports pinning, custom naming, and item counts. Documents are automatically categorized by type with filterable tabs, while notes support tagging for cross-folder discovery. The search system works universally across all content types.
Theming Engine: Three appearance modes (Light, Dark, Blue Focus) were built using a dynamic theming system that propagates color changes throughout the entire app consistently, letting users choose the environment that helps them focus best.
